A medium banana is fat-free and provides around 110 calories. A rich source of important nutrients, bananas provide around 450 mg of potassium, 3 g of dietary fiber, 1 g of protein and 15 percent of the daily value of vitamin C. Of the 30 g of carbohydrates contained in a medium banana, 8 g come from starch and 19 from sugars, with the remainder coming from fiber.

Although bananas are a rich source of important nutrients, you must still be careful in how you eat it and how much. All carbohydrates are metabolized as sugar once they reach the blood stream, which is why they cause that spike in our blood sugar levels.  When you eat, your blood sugars rise. In order to keep your blood sugar stable all day, it important to focus on balanced eating.  Protein, fat, and carbohydrate eaten every few hours will promote stable blood sugar.

Can I still Eat a Banana?

My kids love to eat bananas and apples and other complex carbohydrates, but my rule is they must ALWAYS add a protein and/or fat source to it.  If you add a protein or fat source with the carbohydrate, it softens the effect carbs will have on your blood sugar levels avoiding sugar spikes. In addition, it fuels your body and you will stay full longer.

Some good options to add to a banana is Peanut Butter (Fat), Homemade Chocolate with Coconut Oil (Fat), Almonds (fat), and Protein Smoothie (Protein).  When I use bananas in my smoothie, I make sure to only use 1/2 banana and will balance it out with Jay Robb Protein Powder (Protein) to the smoothie.

If you are trying lose weight, I don’t recommend eating a banana often.  If you crave one, go ahead and have it but always make sure to add Protein with it.  When you start eating your carbohydrates following this rule, you will notice such a difference that you will always make sure to add them to your food.

Have Some Fun

My kids have learned what eating a carb without Protein and/or Fat does to them. They have found creative ways to incorporate them into their meals.  Clean Eating isn’t always fun for kids but with some creativity you can make it a fun, learning experience as they learn to listen to their bodies and the effects food has on them.

Adding a fun craft project such as this makes it even more fun.  My kids loved making these Banana Minions and so will yours. I found this adorable Minion Outfit HERE and used Elmer’s Glue to attach the pieces to the banana. Then, when they are ready to eat them remove the pieces and enjoy.
